[RESOLVED] Where is Burnt Rock in New York State?« Back to Previous Page

My great-grandparents were William Wheeler (b 1825 Jefferson Co, NY) and his second cousin Elizabeth Wheeler (b 1830, Warren Co, NY). They met in Jefferson County when she arrived to help cook for workers during the harvest, and were married in September, 1846, in (according to a family Bible) "Burnt Rock." I had no luck in Warren County a few years back when I asked at various records offices. Could it have been in Jefferson County? That place is not associated with residences of any branch of the Wheelers, and I would think they'd have married in one or another family's home.

Hello again Tom- I went to GenealogyBank & did a search, finding probably the same stories you did. My Wheelers were almost certainly acquainted with James LeRay de Chaumont and the subsequent owners of Burnt Rock Farm. An 1877 article about the early settlement of the area casually referred to just "Burnt Rock." I suspect that by 1846 that was one of the nicest houses in the area. Perhaps the owner invited them to have a wedding there, perhaps he actually charged a fee, who knows, but Elizabeth & William do appear to have been married on that property. Unless there was a now-forgotten crossroads village that the farm was named for! They were married in September, so really during another harvest season. My references to this place will carry the caveat "appears to be." Thanks again for your help! Kathryn

Hello from Tom LaClair, President of JCNYGS. I did a GenealogyBank newspaper search for the Watertown Daily Times newspaper searching for "Burnt Rock" and I got several hits near for a place in Rosiere in the Town of Cape Vincent, New York.
