What is a Query?
A query is a request for information about a family member or ancestor that you want to know more about. If you are searching for a specific surname and would like assistance from JCNYGS members, we encourage you to reach out. Queries can be submitted either through the online forum below or by mail (see details at the bottom of this page).
Please take a moment to read our “Rules and Guidelines”
1. Respect Privacy – Do not share personal information about living individuals without their consent.
2. Ensure Accuracy – Provide reliable, verified information and cross-check your data.
3. Cite Your Sources – Always include references for your information whenever possible.
4. Respect Fellow Researchers – Avoid mocking or criticizing others’ work.
5. Be Open to New Ideas – Accept new findings and corrections, & engage with others constructively.
6. Avoid Harmful Content – Refrain from posting offensive, discriminatory, or harmful material.
7. Respect the Rules – Ensure that you follow all JCNYGS guidelines and rules to help keep the site safe and enjoyable.
Violation of any of these rules could result in the termination of your membership and/or your ability to post to be revoked.

Guidelines
When submitting a query, please provide the following information
- Your First & Last Name
- Name of person you are inquiring about
- In What Town and County did they live (if known)
- Provide a specific research question about the person. Be sure to include any relevant information you know regarding their birth, death, and marriage; any government or military service; etc.
- Names of Parents, Spouse or Children (if applicable)
- Your Email Address

2. Name of person you are inquiring about
3. In What Town and County did they live (if known)
4. Provide a brief description (what you know as far as birth, death, and marriage) of the person you are researching. Be sure to Include any relevant information in this section (Ex. military service)
5. Names of Parents, Spouse or Children (if applicable)
6. Your Email Address
