Revolutionary War Soldier Monument

May 13, 2025 | Tom LaClair | News
All across the USA, people are excited to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, which was not merely a day, July 4, 1776, but a decade-long struggle for our independence and freedom. A Jefferson County-wide committee (with a few JCNYGS members on it) was formed with plans to dedicate a monument honoring all Patriot Soldiers who relocated to Jefferson County, New York, after the American Revolutionary War. Specifically, those known to have passed away and were buried in Jefferson County. The vision is to dedicate a monument in Watertown during the summer of 2026.

A list of all known Patriot Soldiers that died and/or were buried in Jefferson County can be found at https://jefferson.nygenweb.net/nnysardarjpp.htm. This comprehensive list is the collective efforts of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Historical Societies, Genealogy Societies, and the work of many family genealogists. SAR member Bruce Coyne composed this Patriot Soldier list as shown.

Please consider that Jefferson County, New York, was not established until 1805, years after the Revolutionary War. Therefore, no Patriot Soldier originated from Jefferson County.

We invite all of those who are known to have Patriot Soldiers in their family ancestry to view the list of over 350 names. If your ancestor is not listed, and you feel strongly they should be, please contact the Patriot Soldier’s Committee at revwarsoldier@yahoo.com.
Compelling support is required to have names added. To begin the review process, provide as much of the following as possible.
1. Patriot Soldier’s name:
2. Patriot Soldier’s birthdate:
3. Patriot Soldier’s birth location:
4. Patriot Soldier’s joining location:
5. Patriot Soldier’s releasing location and rank:

If you have an ancestor who was a Patriot, but not a soldier, feel free to contact us at revwarsoldier@yahoo.com. For example, Benjamin Franklin was a Patriot who advocated for our nation’s freedom and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but was not a fighting soldier. If you have someone fitting these criteria, we welcome the opportunity to discuss this person’s contributions to our nation’s independence.

With your help, we will honor all of our Jefferson County Patriots. Thank you!
